Community Guidelines

Welcome to the HMC Community!

HMC is built on collaboration, respect, and a shared love for learning mathematics. Our community includes students, educators, and curious learners from diverse backgrounds. To ensure everyone has a positive and productive experience, we ask all members to follow these guidelines.

Our Core Values

Respect: Treat everyone with kindness and dignity

Support: Help others learn and grow

Integrity: Be honest and authentic

Safety: Keep our community secure and welcoming

Excellence: Strive for quality in contributions and interactions

Community Rules

1. Be Respectful and Kind

  • Treat all community members with respect, regardless of their skill level, background, or perspective
  • No bullying, harassment, hate speech, or discrimination of any kind
  • Disagree constructively—focus on ideas, not personal attacks
  • Be patient with learners who are struggling or asking questions

2. Keep It Educational and Appropriate

  • All content should be related to mathematics, learning, or exam preparation
  • No inappropriate, offensive, or explicit content (including text, images, or links)
  • Keep discussions on-topic in study groups and comment sections
  • No spam, advertising, or self-promotion without permission

3. Support Authentic Learning

  • Help others learn by explaining concepts, not just giving answers
  • Encourage understanding over memorization
  • Share helpful resources and study techniques
  • Don’t share exam answers or facilitate cheating during active exams
  • Academic integrity is essential—help others learn, don’t enable shortcuts that undermine education

4. Protect Privacy and Safety

  • Never share personal information (yours or others’) including full names, addresses, phone numbers, school names, or social media handles
  • Don’t ask others for personal information
  • If you’re under 18, never arrange to meet someone from HMC in person
  • Report any concerning behavior to HMC moderators immediately

5. Use Appropriate Language

  • Communicate clearly and professionally
  • No profanity, vulgar language, or inappropriate jokes
  • Write in a way that’s helpful and easy to understand
  • Be mindful that our community includes young learners

6. Give Credit Where It’s Due

  • Don’t plagiarize or claim others’ work as your own
  • If you’re sharing content from external sources, provide attribution
  • Respect intellectual property and copyright
  • Original explanations and solutions are always appreciated

7. Report, Don’t Retaliate

  • If you see rule violations, report them to moderators—don’t engage
  • Use the report function for inappropriate content or behavior
  • Trust our moderation team to handle issues fairly
  • Don’t publicly call out or shame other users

8. Respect Educators and Moderators

  • Our teachers and moderators volunteer their time to help you succeed
  • Follow their guidance and respect their decisions
  • If you disagree with a moderation action, contact us privately through proper channels
  • Recognize that educators are here to help, not to be taken advantage of

What Happens If Rules Are Broken?

We believe in education and second chances, but we take community safety seriously. Violations may result in:

First offense: Warning and explanation of rule violation

Repeat offenses: Temporary suspension from community features

Serious violations: Permanent ban from HMC community features or platform

Serious violations include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Harassment, threats, or hate speech
  • Sharing inappropriate content involving minors
  • Attempting to harm the platform or other users
  • Facilitating cheating during live exams
  • Repeated rule violations after warnings

Reporting Concerns

If you see something concerning:

  1. Use the “Report” button on any comment, post, or message
  2. Email us at [email protected]
  3. For urgent safety concerns, contact us immediately

All reports are reviewed by our moderation team and kept confidential.

Building a Positive Community Together

Great communities don’t just happen—they’re built by members who care. You can help by:

  • Welcoming new members and helping them feel comfortable
  • Sharing your knowledge generously
  • Celebrating others’ successes
  • Providing constructive feedback
  • Leading by example
